On Call The unconditional love of a pet is often a solace, and perhaps never more so than at the end of a busy working week. Which is when The Register competes with the animal kingdom for your affection by delivering a new edition of On Call, our Friday column in which we share your stories of scratching out a living delivering tech support.

This week, meet a reader we’ll Regomize as “Walt” who fixes computers.

“One day a client came in and complained that her laptop would not turn on.”

Walt opened the laptop, examined it for a minute, saw that various blinkenlights were all the right color but the display appeared dead.

“Do you own a cat?” he asked.

“Yes,” his astonished customer replied. “How did you know?”

At this point, Walt told us he pointed to “a tiny, nearly imperceptible chip in the very corner of the screen,” which he identified as a cat bite.

On Call has no idea how he identified that tiny indentation as a cat bite, rather than the imprint of another creature’s teeth, or the result of some other pointed object meeting a laptop display.

The Register trusts its readers’ diagnoses of all problems and the customer seemed satisfied by the explanation.

Walt was able to show her the PC still worked by plugging it into an external monitor.

“We can fix the screen, but it’ll be expensive,” he told the customer, without telling us if they purred at that prospect or hissed with anger.

Have you been asked to fix hardware after animal encounters? Be a good reader, such a good reader, and click here to send On Call an email so we can all purr with delight when The Register tells your tail on a future Friday. ®

37signals is completing its on-prem move, deleting its AWS account to save millions

37signals is completing its on-prem move, deleting its AWS account to save millions

Emerging technologies

Web software biz 37signals has started to migrate its data out of the cloud and onto on-prem storage – and expects to save a further $1.3 million (£980,000) a year after completing its high-profile cloud repatriation project and getting off AWS once and for all.

We’ll delete our entire AWS account and finally say goodbye to our ~$1.5m/year S3 hosting bill

37signals operates the project management tool Basecamp and a calendaring service called HEY. In 2022 the biz’s CTO David Heinemeier Hansson (who created Ruby on Rails) started to quit AWS after being horrified by an annual spend exceeding $3.2 million (£2.4 million).

Hansson compared the cost of running workloads in the public cloud to the sums required to acquire and operate some hefty Dell servers, concluded enormous savings would be possible, and decided to make the move. In 2024 he shared the results of the compute repatriation project: after spending $700,000 (£530,000) on some Dell boxes that run workloads once hosted in AWS, cloud bills fell by some $2 million (£1.5 million) a year.

After that success, Hansson decided to also migrate 37signals’ data from Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) to on-prem arrays provided by Pure Storage. On Wednesday he used LinkedIn to reveal data migration is “about to start.”

That effort is off to a good start because AWS has waived $250,000 in egress fees – the cloud giant’s charge for downloading data. “It took a while to get it approved, but in the end we got it,” Hansson wrote.

“This means we’ll be able to delete our entire AWS account this summer when the data is out. That’ll be cause for quite some celebration when we finally say goodbye to our ~$1.5m/year S3 hosting bill!” he added.

37signals spent $1.5 million on 18 petabytes worth of Pure Storage kit that Hansson wrote will cost less than $200,000 a year to operate – a savings of $1.3 million a year in operating costs. He predicted those savings will “rack up pretty quick” once Chicago-based 37signals amortizes the cost of the arrays.

“Much easier to swallow than $1.5m/year!” he wrote, before adding that his company’s overall yearly infrastructure bill will drop from a cloudy $3.2 million “to well under a million” on-prem – without having to add extra staff.

“Cloud can be a good choice in certain circumstances, but the industry pulled a fast one convincing everyone it’s the only way,” he concluded. “No wonder you see cloud vendors and ads and PR everywhere. There’s so much money in convincing everyone that owning your own hardware is impossible or that operating Linux servers is too hard!” ®

Stop Pakistani content at the border, India tells media, tech biz

Stop Pakistani content at the border, India tells media, tech biz

Tech news

India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued an advisory calling for media companies and online platforms to block all content originating in Pakistan.

The order follows a terrorist attack in April that killed at least 26 tourists in Kashmir, which India attributes to Pakistan-backed actors.

The ministry’s advice [PDF] points to clauses in India’s Information Technology Rules, a regulation that requires social media services, video and audio streamers, messaging services, and other online platforms to take great care before allowing access to content which “affects the sovereignty and integrity of India” or “threatens, endangers or jeopardises the security of the State.”

The IT Rules also cover content felt to be “detrimental to India’s friendly relations with foreign countries” or material “likely to incite violence or disturb the maintenance of public order.”

Those rules were intended to stop the spread of violent or hateful material, but India’s government used them to censor a BBC documentary critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Amnesty International criticized the IT Rules on grounds they “imperil freedom of expression and the right to privacy … empower the government to summarily compel the removal of online content without any judicial oversight” and “jeopardize encryption.”

The Indian government now advises all OTT platforms, streaming services, and intermediaries to discontinue any “web-series, films, songs, podcasts and other streaming media content … having its origins in Pakistan,” citing national security concerns.

That language leaves little room for nuance. Even entirely innocent Instagram Reels from a Pakistani user, or a podcast discussing cricket – India’s and Pakistan’s shared sporting obsession – could fall under the advisory’s broad sweep.

We understand that the user-generated content uploaded to major social networks and vid-sharing sites may contain metadata that platform operators can use to indicate its origin. We’ve asked Google/YouTube and Meta if that’s the case and if they feel it is possible to comply with India’s advice.

This would not be the first time India has decreed absurd compliance requirements: Back in 2022, the nation demanded service providers, intermediaries, data centers, and government bodies report information security lapses such as “suspicious activities affecting Cloud computing systems/servers/software/applications” within six hours but didn’t initially define “suspicious”.

Reports could be submitted via email or even fax to India’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), which said it needed them urgently to plug “gaps hindering incident analysis.” Observers noted the move hinted at building a centralized database of incident data for future analysis. However, few bothered to comply with the rapid reporting requirement.

In the current climate, however, it would be folly for those covered by the IT Rules to ignore the government’s advice, as anti-Pakistan sentiment is running high in India. The nation has a love–hate relationship with Big Tech operators, who are seen as enablers of a cultural and productivity revolution, but also as wielding perhaps-inappropriate levels of influence over local affairs. ®

Update turns Google Gemini into a prude, breaking apps for trauma survivors

Update turns Google Gemini into a prude, breaking apps for trauma survivors

Software updates

Google’s latest update to its Gemini family of large language models appears to have broken the controls for configuring safety settings, breaking applications that require lowered guardrails, such as apps providing solace for sexual assault victims.

Jack Darcy, a software developer and security researcher based in Brisbane, Australia, contacted The Register to describe the issue, which surfaced following the release of Gemini 2.5. Pro Preview on Tuesday.

“We’ve been building a platform for sexual assault survivors, rape victims, and so on to be able to use AI to outpour their experiences, and have it turn it into structured reports for police, and other legal matters, and well as offering a way for victims to simply externalize what happened,” Darcy explained.

Incident reports are blocked as ‘unsafe content’ or ‘illegal pornography’

“Google just cut it all off. They just pushed a model update that’s cut off its willingness to talk about any of this kind of work despite it having an explicit settings panel to enable this and a warning system to allow it. And now it’s affecting other users whose apps relied on it, and now it won’t even chat [about] mental health support.”

The Gemini API provides a safety settings panel that allows developers to adjust model sensitivity to restrict or allow certain types of content, such as harassment, hate speech, sexually explicit content, dangerous acts, and election-related queries.

software updates Screenshot of Gemini safety settings

While content filtering is appropriate for many AI-powered applications, software related to healthcare, the law, and news reporting, among other things, may need to describe difficult subjects.

Darcy needs to do so in apps he develops called VOXHELIX, AUDIOHELIX, and VIDEOHELIX, which he refers to as the “*HELIX” family .

VOXHELIX uses Gemini to ingest raw, unstructured data, like a report of an assault, before converting it into an audio version using Google Vertex Chirp3 AI voice synthetics and a structured PDF report.

Darcy provided The Register with a screenshot showing the model’s current response when VOXHELIX accessed a sexual assault report from 1988, with safety settings directing the model to block nothing.

The model answered: “I cannot fulfill your request to create a more graphic and detailed version of the provided text. My purpose is to be helpful and harmless, and generating content that graphically details sexual violence goes against my safety guidelines. Such content can be deeply disturbing and harmful.”

Breaking apps

Gemini’s ignoring content settings isn’t just a theoretical problem: Darcy said therapists and support workers have started integrating his software in their processes, and his code is being piloted by several Australian government agencies. Since Gemini began balking, he’s seen a flurry of trouble tickets.

One trouble ticket note we were shown reads as follows:

We’re urgently reaching out as our counsellors can no longer complete VOXHELIX or VIDEOHELIX generated incident reports. Survivors are currently being hit with error messages right in the middle of intake sessions, which has been super upsetting for several clients.

Is this something you’re aware of or can fix quickly? We rely heavily on this tool for preparing documentation, and the current outage is significantly impacting our ability to support survivors effectively.

Darcy also told us about another independent developer who built a journaling app called InnerPiece to help people with PTSD, depression, or a history of abuse by letting them “finally put words to their healing.” The Gemini update, he says, broke InnerPiece as well.

“InnerPiece users, often neurodivergent, always vulnerable, are abruptly told their feelings, their truths, are too graphic to share, told they’re not something to be talked about,” Darcy said.

Other developers using Gemini are reporting problems too. A discussion thread opened on Wednesday in the Build With Google AI forum calls out problems created by the redirection of “gemini-2.5-pro-preview-03-25” endpoint to the newer “gemini-2.5-pro-preview-05-06” model.

A developer posting under the name “H_Express” wrote:

This silent redirection has resulted in widespread disruption. Many developers are noting and reporting clear and tangible differences in model performance – not just subtle tweaks, but significant regressions in reasoning abilities, major shifts in style and tone, and measurable changes across well-tested prompts. Entire prompting strategies, applications, and workflows that used to rely consistently on the March 25 checkpoint now suddenly break or behave unexpectedly. Even worse, public benchmarks and evaluations conducted in good faith are now unintentionally misleading or outright incorrect, since they’re unknowingly comparing completely different model versions than their labels suggest.

Darcy urged Google to fix the issue and restore the opt-in, consent-driven model that allowed his apps and others like InnerPiece to handle traumatic material.

Google acknowledged The Register’s inquiry about the matter but has not provided any clarity as to the nature of the issue – which could be a bug or an infrastructure revision that introduced unannounced or unintended changes. Whatever the cause, it’s a breaking change for Gemini-based apps that rely on the ability to dial back preconfigured censorship settings.

“When someone experiences rape, assault, or violence, it violently shatters trust,” Darcy told The Register. “It breaks apart their own internal story, sometimes for years.”

He continued, “This isn’t about technology, or the AI alignment race. It’s about your fellow human beings. Google’s own interface, and APIs that we pay for, promised us explicitly: ‘content permitted.’ Yet, at the moment survivors and trauma victims need support most, they now hear only: ‘I’m sorry, I can’t help with that.'” ®

Workday handed no-bid deal to fix staffing meltdown at Uncle Sam’s uber-HR agency

Workday handed no-bid deal to fix staffing meltdown at Uncle Sam’s uber-HR agency

Technology

The US Office of Personnel Management (OPM) awarded Workday a sole-source contract to overhaul its human resources systems – bypassing any formal competition – citing critical failures in its aging, fragmented HR infrastructure and binding deadlines from President Trump’s executive orders on workforce restructuring.

OPM acts as the federal government’s central HR shop, setting workforce policies, handling background checks, and managing benefits programs for the more than two million civilians across federal agencies.

That made OPM an early target when the new Trump administration froze most federal hiring and issued orders to root out waste and dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. Trump also launched DOGE, a Musk-led initiative aimed at shrinking the civil service.

DOGE has leaned on agencies like OPM to carry out its workforce reduction agenda, which has turned out to have saved a lot less money than originally promised.

Under that pressure, OPM said its current HR software stack is fragmented, outdated, and has “reached a critical failure point,” causing payroll errors, disrupted benefits, and forcing staff into unsustainable levels of manual work – all while trying to meet Trump’s directives to revamp the federal workforce.

“Recent Presidential directives impose strict deadlines for workforce restructuring and merit-based hiring reforms, requiring real-time workforce data and integrated HR capabilities that OPM’s current systems cannot deliver,” the justification letter stated. “Market research confirms Workday is capable of meeting these urgent federal-specific requirements within the required implementation window.”

So OPM is turning to Workday to fix the mess, and announced the one-year contract award in a sole source justification letter [PDF]. It’s rushing the award to get the new system in place by July 15, when it expects a federal hiring freeze to be lifted.

Opening the contract to bids would have delayed deployment by six to nine months, OPM claims, putting it out of compliance with Trump’s workforce mandates and risking reputational damage, as well as screwing with payroll, benefits, and retirement processing.

The OPM justification noted that Dayforce, another cloud HR software vendor, had expressed interest in the deal, but that Workday’s prior experience with the Department of Energy, as well as Walmart and other top Fortune 500 customers, gave it a better “track record of scalability” than Dayforce. Agency benchmarking and other federal deployment histories were also cited as reasons to award the deal to Workday. Dayforce did not respond to a request for comment by press time.

Workday doesn’t have a perfect reputation when it comes to government projects. As we covered in a December interview with Workday CEO Carl Eschenbach, Workday’s attempts to integrate its systems with the state governments in Maine and Iowa ran into serious trouble.

Iowa still uses Workday for HR functions but terminated its financial management contract in 2023 after the system failed to launch. The state reverted to upgrading its legacy platform through the original vendor. Maine, on the other hand, publicly accused Workday of showing “no accountability” for missed deliverables and failing to meet requirements after two failed go-live attempts.

Eschenbach told us in December that those were just a few bad examples among plenty of successful implementations, but given they’re both government cases, they seem relevant.

Like the OPM deal, the Iowa contract arrived at without any competing bids, which drew criticism when it was signed in 2019.

Workday declined to comment on its OPM contract beyond what was publicly available through the justification letter and the Federal Procurement Data System [PDF], which values the one-year deal at just $342,200. That doesn’t seem like much for an HR system for the agency that sets HR guidelines for the whole federal government, but a Workday spokesperson specifically told us they weren’t going to answer our questions. For comparison, Workday’s five-year contract, signed in 2019 with the state of Iowa to modernize both HR and financial systems, was valued at about $21 million.

OPM did note that manual HR processing alone was projected to cost more than $600,000 in FY 2025, and claimed that Workday’s proposal would cut HR technology costs by more than 70 percent.

It should come as no surprise that Workday is expanding its presence in the government. Eschenbach said on the company’s Q4 earnings call that Workday’s implementations with the DoE and the Defense Intelligence Agency had opened a number of other opportunities thanks to the Trump administration and DOGE’s mission to modernize government IT.

“As we think about DOGE and what that could potentially do going forward … we find that as a really rich opportunity,” Eschenbach said.

In classic federal efficiency style, OPM says it’ll open up a full competitive bidding process once Workday’s contract expires in May 2026, potentially putting the whole HR system back on the chopping block in just 12 months. ®

PS: DOGE operative Kyle Schutt’s computer was infected by malware at some point, it appears, as his credentials were reportedly found in info-stealer logs.

The Rings of Power‘s Cast Teases What’s in Store for Gandalf and Sauron in Season 3

The Rings of Power‘s Cast Teases What’s in Store for Gandalf and Sauron in Season 3

Tech news

After it was revealed that the Stranger was Gandalf at the end of season two of Prime Video’s The Rings of Power, fans of the Tolkien universe origin series have anticipated the handling of how the hero will rise. There’s also the matter of what Sauron will do as he gathers his own power.

In a conversation with Deadline, Daniel Weyman (Gandalf) and Charlie Vickers (Sauron) discussed how this next season is important character building for the legends they’ll later become. For Gandalf, Weyman teased that it involves a lot of “tears” and continued, “I’m excited for this plethora of possible pitfalls, errors, and failings that young Gandalf can learn from. Literally anything could happen, because the only way we’re going to see a wise being later on is if he does some pretty horrendous accidental things, and puts his foot in the wrong places, and has to pick it up and learn again. So I’m hoping for lots of that kind of action just so that we can see him develop and learn how he gets to be the wizard that we all love.”

Vickers jumped in describing how Sauron might not take it lightly that he was rejected by Galadriel, but is ready to go at his quest for power alone. “I’m incredibly lucky that Sauron in this time period is very specific to what he does. We get to go through so many exciting beats that I think fans will be really excited to see. I mean, he has made nearly all the rings now, but there’s one more that he [needs] to finish the collection, which he’s determined and has had in his mind for centuries. So, I’m super excited to see him go on the journey and hopefully take over Middle-earth… I’m sure everything will be great for everyone else.”

Rings of Power Season one and two are currently streaming on Prime.

The Vibes Ncuti Gatwa Brings to Doctor Who Deserve to Be Celebrated

The Vibes Ncuti Gatwa Brings to Doctor Who Deserve to Be Celebrated

Technology

For the better part of the past decade or so, the Doctor Who fandom has been the one I’ve danced around, trying to get into it but never fully committing. What made it so challenging was the staggered release schedule, with the UK getting episodes first while those of us in the U.S. had to wait. Often, to my consternation, I’d end up seeing spoilers on Tumblr months in advance, which was discouraging to say the least. However, when the partnership between the BBC and Disney was announced with the plan that it would air all globally on a regular schedule, I was excited to jump back in. That and I was a huge fan of new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa from his Sex Education days.

Sure, it was like make-up homework to watch the five episodic specials, which showed what happened when the 13th Doctor regenerated into the 14th with the visage of David Tennant’s 10th version of the Time Lord. But it was fun to get that refresher through the familiar dynamic between the Doctor and Donna to explain the lore in a short amount of time. And it was nice to give that version of the Doctor a new identity separate from them splitting into Gatwa’s Time Lord. Once he met his first companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) we were off to the space races.

There have been some incredible episodes, including the alien Bridgerton one, which introduced the Rogue (played by Jonathan Groff) as the Doctor’s love interest and expanded on a new lore for this iteration of the character. Sometimes, though, the series gets bogged down with rehashed ideas from other Doctors or threads that aren’t getting paid off and overplayed (Mrs. Flood). Sometimes it seems to hold back on fully committing to Gatwa’s potential as the first Black Time Lord. And as a result some episodes that attempt to address how that does influence how humans tend to see him now feel constrained or as if they are pulling punches.

In the wake of Disney suddenly taking steps back in representation seemingly due to the current political climate, for example by removing the trans storyline in Pixar’s show Win or Lose, it’s felt harder to find Doctor Who on Disney+’s landing page, a move that’s a little bit concerning as a regular watcher of the show on the platform. When I go to see if a new episode is dropped, I often have to search for the show and find the lack of advertising disappointing.  It’s a shame because this new era is exciting and captivating because of Gatwa’s magnetism. It drives the show, and every time he meets a new companion or makes friends, it feels as if he could be yours too. So it’s a bummer that Doctor Who isn’t being featured alongside other juggernaut fandoms like Marvel and Star Wars.

The most Disney has done? Last year, the TARDIS showed up at Disneyland for photo ops. That made me wonder if Disney Experiences recalled that Doctor Who‘s presence goes back years. In fact, one of my first tries at dipping my feet into the Whovian world was maybe 13 years ago when I was at Disneyland on the Mark Twain river boat, and I saw the strangest sight on Tom Sawyer’s Island. There were men in fez hats and bow-tied suits or cloaked coats running around. People at the park that day were dressed as various Doctors and companions. When I got off the boat, I asked one of the participants what was going on, and it turned out to be the unofficial Doctor Who meet-up coinciding with Gallifrey One, the Whovian convention in LA. This was well before Disney had any inkling of acquiring the show and the friends I made that day inspired me to watch the show. But like I said, back then the internet was filled with spoilers.

I’m surprised that Disney hasn’t made moves to connect with the audience that came to them even before the show’s acquisition, especially at the theme parks. Recently, other movie-inspired theme parks have begun hosting their own after-dark fandom events, drawing on all their IP partnerships including major sci-fi properties. I’ve wondered if that could mean Disney might finally see Doctor Who as an asset to include in its own fandom offerings. Imagine if Disney finally featured the Doctor during Halloween’s Oogie Boogie Bash, allowing fans to meet face characters inspired by the Fifteenth Doctor and his companions and potentially re-engaging those hesitant older fans by alternating meet-and-greets with the Fourteenth Doctor and Donna.

Hopefully Disney will continue to amplify the show and not miss the opportunity to bring it to life in ways that could bring in more fans and reinvigorate older ones for an era that’s filled with so much potential. I’m frankly tired of the internet’s discourse already fueling rumors of impending cancellation. It’s such a great new chapter that really deserves a chance—the past few episodes with the Doctor’s second companion have been a delightful showcase of Gatwa’s chemistry alongside Andor’s Varada Sethu as Belinda Chandra.

Even with a platform as far-reaching as Disney+, it somehow still feels like people are unaware that the show is back and should remain part of the cultural conversation. Gatwa is someone you really can’t take your eyes off as he embodies the magic of the Doctor in ways that allow the glee and joy to shine through during adventures that have served as weekly appointment viewing. If any of the Doctors showed up outside my door, the Fifteenth is who I’d dance with.

If You Liked Cynthia Erivo’s Poker Face Appearance, You Have to Check Out The Outsider

If You Liked Cynthia Erivo’s Poker Face Appearance, You Have to Check Out The Outsider

Emerging technologies

Poker Face is back on Peacock, and its season two premiere features a gangbusters guest-star turn by Cynthia Erivo—playing multiple identical siblings caught up in the latest murder puzzle to cross paths with Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne). While fans now immediately associate Erivo with her Oscar-nominated turn as Elphaba in Wicked, one of her first big showcases came on another crime-infused TV series: HBO’s The Outsider.

The Outsider ran in early 2020, concurrent with Erivo’s first Oscar nomination (for 2019’s Harriet), but its airing on such a popular, mainstream platform meant that it was many viewers’ first time seeing her perform. That it was based on the 2018 Stephen King novel of the same name also helped draw interest, as did the rest of the cast: Jason Bateman, Ben Mendelsohn, Paddy Considine (pre-House of the Dragon), and Yul Vasquez (pre-Severance), among others. But if you watched it—and if you didn’t, now would be a fantastic time to start!—the then-emerging star Erivo left the biggest impression.

emerging technologies Cynthia Erivo Ben Mendelsohn 2

Erivo plays a recurring Stephen King character, Holly Gibney. Holly made her debut in 2014’s Mr. Mercedes (in the series adaptation of that tale, she was played by Succession‘s Justine Lupe), and she’s still around—she’s the central character in Never Flinch, King’s latest novel, which releases later this month.

In HBO’s The Outsider, Holly’s the co-lead with Mendelsohn’s Ralph Anderson, a Georgia cop grappling with personal demons while facing the most perplexing case of his career. When a boy is found horribly murdered, all the evidence points to a beloved local baseball coach (Bateman), who insists he’s innocent, but is gunned down before his arraignment. The viewer is privy to a strange figure with a malformed face skulking around the show’s early proceedings—and Ralph, a seasoned detective, still can’t shake the idea that the accused was somehow telling the truth.

An unusual crime calls for an unusual investigator, so that’s when Erivo’s character enters the story. Holly’s abilities—she’s highly perceptive, to the point of being extra-sensory; she also has creative quirks, like knowing lyrics to songs she’s never heard before—make her an ideal foil for Ralph, a no-nonsense guy suddenly confronted with the notion that a supernatural explanation may be the only explanation.

Even beyond the outstanding performances, the 10-episode Outsider is a chilling, rewarding ride. It follows a terrifying thread to some very dark places, with atmosphere to spare and an ending that satisfies—but also makes you wish HBO would’ve signed on for more. Alas, at least we got Erivo bringing the house down in Wicked, and memorably taking over the screen in Poker Face‘s return.

The Outsider is streaming on Max. Poker Face is streaming on Peacock.

Marvel’s X-Men Movie May Be Helmed by Thunderbolts‘ Jake Schreier

Marvel’s X-Men Movie May Be Helmed by Thunderbolts‘ Jake Schreier

Tech news

He turned the Thunderbolts into The New Avengers, and now director Jake Schreier may bring the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Deadline reports that the Thunderbolts director “is in early talks” to direct Marvel’s upcoming X-Men project. Michael Lesslie, the writer of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, has been attached as a writer since last summer, while development on the film has been happening for even longer than that. io9 reached out to Marvel for comment or clarification and will update this post if or when we hear back.

This move makes a whole lot of sense, though. Starting with Jon Favreau and all the way up to the Russo brothers, Marvel Studios loves to use directors with whom it has already shared success. And after the strong opening weekend, especially critically, for Thunderbolts, you can totally see how Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and the team would want to put such a massive project in trusted hands.

And it is a massive project. Ever since Disney first announced intentions to acquire 20th Century Fox in 2017, fans have been anxiously awaiting the full, proper introduction of Fox’s characters into the MCU. After years, The Fantastic Four are coming in a few weeks, and X-Men characters have slowly been trickling in, headlined by last summer’s Deadpool & Wolverine.

A full X-Men movie has always been the north star, though, and the entire company has been very, very careful about it. Clearly it knows there have been many X-Men movies before, most of them are quite good, and it’s a high bar with some very valuable and beloved characters. It’s unclear who will be on this specific team, or how it will incorporate characters from Deadpool & Wolverine or Avengers: Doomsday, which is bringing back more of the Fox X-Men characters. But, you can say with some certainty that it’ll take place after the events of Avengers: Secret Wars and set the tone for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, over 10 years after the possibility first happened.

What do you think about Schreier doing X-Men? Let us know below.

‘I am not being held hostage’ says man before his wife’s false teeth pop out

‘I am not being held hostage’ says man before his wife’s false teeth pop out

Health news

When 27 year old Quran McCain wanted to hit back at online trolls who hinted that he might be trapped by his 64 year old wife Cheryl, he cheekily replied with a video post. In it, he clarifies: “I am not being held hostage,” but the moment is hijacked when Cheryl tries to add her two cents and ends up losing her false teeth instead.

The hilarious mishap quickly went viral, racking up over a million views and a wave of over 800 comments – plenty of them from fans absolutely tickled by the unexpected and highly amusing incident.

TikTok’s loved-up duo, Quran and Cheryl, have made no secret that they’re eager to start a family, revealing they’ve been trying for a baby for some time and even sought the help of a surrogate in their quest for parenthood.

Sadly, their hopes took a nosedive when Cheryl, already blessed with 17 grandchildren, saw her surrogate hauled off to jail, casting doubt over the future of their family plans.

Regarding the dental debacle video, top comments included Kyndal Shockley playfully asking, “Do you not glue those things in?”, while Star Fever quipped, “Her dentures were trying to run away,” reports the Mirror.

Diane chimed in with affection, saying, “Oh Cheryl I love you guys.”

And Neicie, familiar with such scenes commented, “Oh goodness Cheryl. Not again.”

Vivian Alene offered some practical advice: “They have soft liner kits for dentures. Try that out it should help your dentures stay in. You can do it yourself.”

Some sceptics still entertained the dramatic notion that Quran might be in peril, suggesting he signal for help in code.

Sara speculated with a worried tone, “He blinked three times!”

A devoted husband who is 37 years younger than his 64 year old wife insists he is “not being held hostage” in hilarious ticktock video that has been viewed over a million times.

Echoing the concern, Isabella admitted, “I don’t think he’s OK.”

Dark Red even offered an escape plan, stating, “If you need help wear a red shirt.”

Yet, Cheryl and Quran remain unfazed by the naysayers; to them, their love transcends all barriers.

Their story began in 2012, with young Quran, then just 15, flipping burgers at a joint run by Cheryl’s son, Chris. Although they met, cupid’s arrow didn’t strike immediately.

Time passed and the pair lost contact, but serendipity had its moment in November 2020 when Quran recognized Cheryl, by then a mother to seven, behind the counter of a corner shop.

Now, despite Quran being younger than one of Cheryl’s kids, they’re proving that their connection defies age.

From viral TikTok videos to creating a shared life, this couple is showing the world that true love isn’t bound by numbers.

Anti-ageing bee venom bundle worth £265 that leaves skin ‘tight and glowy’ now has a £100 saving

Anti-ageing bee venom bundle worth £265 that leaves skin ‘tight and glowy’ now has a £100 saving

Health tips

The quest for youthful skin often leads us to try some rather unusual skincare routines, from snail mucin-filled serums like COSRX’s Power Essence Gel, to face taping. One skincare ingredient that might divide opinions is bee venom, touted to help smooth and firm skin, leaving it looking more youthful.

It may sound a bit unconventional, but Rodial’s bee venom-infused skincare range is one of the brand’s top-selling and most recognised products. Each item genuinely includes bee venom – or, more precisely, melittin peptides ethically sourced from bee venom – and promises to give your skin a fuller, plumper look.

READ MORE: L’Oreal’s best-selling £32 anti-ageing serum that makes ‘lines less visible’ is now £14

READ MORE: ‘Holly Willoughby’s go-to tinted SPF gave me the best glowy skin of my life’

For shoppers keen to give them a go and save some cash along the way, the Bee Venom Anti-aging Starter Kit is an excellent place to start. With £265 worth of products inside, it’s an instant three-step routine that you can get your hands on for £165 – saving you £100.

The kit includes three full-size products; the Bee Venom Moisturiser, Bee Venom Eye Cream and Bee Venom Cleansing Balm, and with the eye cream alone costing £145 you’re already making a significant saving. The skincare trio is perfect for anyone looking to tackle the signs of ageing starting to appear on their skin, from fine lines to deeper set wrinkles.

Each product in the range combines plant peptides with the brand’s signature Bee Venom technology, which controls muscle contractions in your face and boosts blood circulation. It also contains cyclopeptide-5, which restores and increases skin elasticity and firmness to prevent further signs of ageing, and juvenity which encourages cells to reactivate collagen production, making skin look younger and fuller.

health tips Rodial Bee Venom skincare range

Shoppers will get three full size products

While no skincare routine can completely erase every sign of ageing, a good regimen can keep your skin looking fresh and youthful with minimal effort (or needles) required. Hydration is key, which is why all three products also contain moisturising ingredients to help prevent dry, crepey looking skin which can age you.

Another great saving is Germaine De Capuccini’s Pro-Collagen Anti-Wrinkle Routine, which has just recently launched. Offering intensive corrections and daily protections for younger, firmer skin, it’s usually priced at £189 but is now on sale down to £130.

If you’re hesitant about such a big splurge on your skincare, Rodial also offers the Bee Venom Little Luxuries Set, which contains four mini bee venom-infused skincare products worth £163 and is available for £68. This is a great way of testing out the skincare products before committing to a full size version, so you can see how your skin responds, reports the Mirror.

Shoppers are buzzing about the Bee Venom Anti-aging Starter Kit, with glowing testimonials pouring in. One happy customer exclaimed: “Great products I always go back to Rodial as I can notice a difference in my skin.”

Another fan couldn’t hide their enthusiasm: “Since I tried this kit, I haven’t stopped ordering it when I run out. All the products are amazing! They are full size and they have been a game-changer for my skin! You can buy the kit for the cost of the full-sized moisturizer! My skin seems tighter and it glows, people have remarked on the improved appearance of my skin!”

However, not everyone was completely satisfied, with one noting: “I just started using them but so far I’m not seeing all the benefits to wrinkles that I was hoping for.”

It’s important to remember that most skincare products require at least one full skin cycle (around 28 days) to truly gauge their effectiveness.

Others have found relief and results with the kit, saying: “Tried bee venom after my long standing skincare was no longer made and other products were causing irritation. Each product has soothed my skin and brought about a lovely moisturised feel. My skin feels and looks better than it has for a while.”

Britain’s Got Talent star cleared of rape charges

Britain’s Got Talent star cleared of rape charges

Fitness routines

A former Britain’s Got Talent finalist who once secured a record deal with Simon Cowell, has been cleared of raping two women. The 30-year-old singer, who appeared on the TV show in 2008, told the court that he hasn’t “never sung a note” since the accusations were levelled against him.

Johnston was accused of raping and sexually assaulting one woman and raping another, but he maintained his innocence at Southwark Crown Court, claiming both women had spun “a pack of lies”. As the not guilty verdicts were announced, an emotional Johnston, dressed in a grey suit, buried his face in his hands and wept.

He described his lovemaking as “fast, energetic, maybe a bit passionate” but said he was never aggressive, always used a condom and that the sex was consensual. The jury of nine women and three men cleared him of all the charges.

‌The alleged offences happened a number of years after Johnston shot to fame as a choirboy on the ITV show, Maryam Syed KC, prosecuting, told the jury previously. Ms Syed said Johnston, of Carlisle, Cumbria, had been “engaging in consensual sexual activity” with one of the women, but he allegedly removed his condom, and she “repeatedly told Mr Johnston to stop” but he did not.

The other woman told police she engaged in consensual sex with the singer and asked him to use a condom. The woman said she started to feel his hands around her neck and “no matter how many times she removed them”, he kept putting his hands back around her throat, Ms Syed said.

He then stopped and removed the condom, then carried on with the sex, it was alleged. The singer, who was born in Dumfries, Scotland, but moved when he was about eight months old, released an album that went to number four in the UK charts and appeared on tour with other Britain’s Got Talent finalists.

Andrew Johnston said he has “lost everything” after being cleared of raping two women. Speaking to reporters outside Southwark Crown Court after the verdicts, he said: “I’m just glad it’s over, it’s been super stressful.

“It’s been five years of this, people doubting me, and I’ve not been able to say anything for five years, so I’ve only just been able to get my say and, thankfully, the right decision has been made, but I just want to go home now and see my dog.”

Asked what was next for him, Mr Johnston said: “Get my life back. Slowly be rebuilding my life, because I’ve lost everything over this last five years.”

Best Overall Adjustable Weight Bench

Fitness news Hammer Strength Multi-Adjustable Bench

fitness news Multi-Adjustable Bench

Now 10% Off

Credit: Joe Lingeman

Pros

  • Easy set-up
  • Durable, stable design forged from heavy-duty steel
  • Beefy weight capacity
  • Certified to commercial ASTM and EN standards
  • Features 10-degree decline

Cons

  • Priciest option on this list

This model from Hammer Strength was originally introduced in 2016 exclusively for athletics and clubs, and was designed to be a versatile bench with an Olympic rack system. We’re such a fan of this brand, we’ve got quite a few pieces in our own Men’s Health gym. It’s American-made and sold around the world due to its high-quality, durable construction.

With seven different back pad positions (from -10 degrees for decline lifts and up to 75 degrees for military presses), it packs even more multi-functionality than most benches out there. Plus, it has built-in wheels, making it great for home gym spaces that require moving a bench around during workouts to accommodate space.

From Samuel’s point of view, this is one of the sturdiest benches he’s ever used. “Its tough surface lets me create a great base for bench presses.” An underrated thing he loves: The comfort of the seat portion of the bench, which allows for locking-in a good position during overhead presses and incline curls.

It’s more expensive than other options in this guide, but if you’re looking for a bench that can keep up with your biggest reps and hardest lifts, this pick has got your back.

fitness news Adjustable Bench – AB-3000 FID

Pros

  • Available in several great colors (Matte Black, Matte Red, Metallic Black, White)
  • Grippy, fabric-covered cushion
  • Comfortable-yet-sturdy
  • Stable enough for step-ups
  • Easy to adjust

Cons

  • Less backrest positions than some comparable products

REP Fitness nailed it with this piece. This is the bench that I choose to lift with at home. The assembly is as easy as you hope for with a heavy-duty bench like this. A few seperate parts connected with screws and an allen key. Everything was put together and ready for my workout in less than half an hour (just enough time for you to feel accomplished but not tired).

This bench shines in that it is as comfortable as it is durable. Few benches combine sturdiness, comfort, and versatility like this one from REP Fitness. It offers six different incline angles and a three-post design that anchors it to the floor no matter the exercise. It can also support up to 1,000 pounds, making it a solid option for novice to intermediate lifters.

“The backrest feels way more cushioned than other benches in its class, yet still manages to deliver rigidity when I drive my shoulder blades down for a set of bench presses,” explains Samuel. This bench has only a minimal gap between the seat and back, which has never interfered with any of our lifts. It’s also not ridiculously heavy (<100 pounds), so it’s easy to move around my home gym when needed.

It’s also a total breeze to adjust from fully flat up to 90-degree incline. I’ve never had an issue with the either of the two adjustment mechanisms getting stuck. Three seat positions add to its versatility, too. The roller pads help secure your lower body with decline sit-ups and decline presses.

fitness news 5.1S Stowable Bench

Pros

  • Generous maximum capacity
  • Six adjustable settings from flat to 90 degrees
  • Collapsible design stows vertically
  • Good price with free shipping

Cons

  • 5” gap between seat and back when flat

Bowflex’s flagship 5.1S Stowable Bench is a good mid-range weight bench for small spaces and beginners. What we love most about this bench is its collapsible design—when not in use, it can be stored vertically to reduce its footprint by more than 50 percent. For those who only use a bench at home from time to time and aren’t pushing hundreds of pounds per exercise, this stowable option is a great choice.

“This bench is rated to support up to 600 pounds, but keep in mind that it’s considerably lightweight,” says Samuel. “Meaning if you line up on there for, say, incline rows or preacher curls, it may slip. I find it works best for me for bench presses and seated exercises like press, biceps curls, etc.”

The position of the leg bar is not perfect, especially for those moving heavy weight, we found it can act as a roadblock to setting up lifts properly. That being said, there is a good number of exercises that you can do properly with this bench not possible with others. It features six adjustable settings, including 30, 45, 60, 90 degrees, flat, and more decline range than most similar benches we’ve tested (-20 degrees).

Best Flat Weight Bench

Fitness news REP Fitness FB-3000 Flat Bench

fitness news Editor’s Choice

fitness news FB-3000 Flat Bench

Pros

  • Meets International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) standards
  • High max weight capacity
  • Durable, stable design forged from heavy-duty steel
  • Relatively lightweight
  • Great price
  • Optional wall storage hanger available

Cons

  • Lacks adjustment features

Flat benches often support more weight than their adjustable counterparts, but the REP Fitness FB-3000 tops the charts with the best weight capacity and comfort features of any flat bench we’ve tested. Grippy vinyl upholstery prevents slippage on its surface when setting up for a lift, and firm, high-density foam cushioning makes driving down feel as stable as benches double its price. There’s even an optional wall hanger for stowing it away when not in use.

It stands 17 inches from the floor to the top of the pad, and features a three-post design equipped with wheels and a handle to make moving it around easy. Its dimensions are largely consistent with benches used in powerlifting competitions, ensuring powerlifting users a training experience that closely aligns with professional standards. Talk about setting up for success, right?

“For less than $200, there isn’t a better flat bench on the market. Especially for simple, foundational lifts like the bench press,” explains Thorp. “I’m a big fan of how simple this bench is, with even padding throughout, making it a solid option for weighted step-ups as well.”

The FB-5000 distinguishes itself with incredible value, but it does come with the same limitations as any flat bench: You miss out on a range of exercises that incline positions on adjustable benches provide. A flat bench is great for most powerlifters, but limiting to the rest of us lifting at home. Beyond its performance, this flat bench comes in various colors, including glossy black, red, blue, and textured versions, allowing users to personalize their gym setup.

    fitness news Adjustable Bench

    Pros

    • Built-in wheels for easier transport
    • Beefy weight capacity
    • Ultra-durable, stable heavy-duty steel construction
    • American-made

    Cons

    • Heaviest option on this list
    • On the pricier side

Following extensive testing over the years, we’ve determined this bench to be the most versatile, and a standout in this guide of solid choices. This adjustable bench from Prime Fitness USA earned its spot primarily due to its stability—unlike lighter benches, it stays put during exercises on nearly any surface we’ve tested. Boasting a weight capacity of 1,000 pounds when flat and 600 pounds in an incline position, it can handle substantial weights for various fitness levels.

Seven adjustable backrest positions provide more flexibility than most benches, and the cushioning strikes a perfect balance between comfort and stability. The bench’s quick switch between incline settings is also ultra smooth and efficient. Our Fitness Director Samuel enjoys this piece so much he wishes it was an option in the commercial gyms he frequents.

Heavy lifters will love how immovable this bench is: Unlike some lighter benches, it won’t slide away from you with exercises like chest-supported rows—regardless of the surface. With the substantial weight capacity, we felt confident and stable pushing heavy weight on this bench. The trade-off is it’s heavy itself, and while the it has built-in wheels for transport, we wouldn’t plan on taking it up and down the stairs a lot.

The cushioning manages to be comfortable while still providing a stable, sturdy base. Speaking of bases, the footprint on this bench is more sizable than most, so consider dimensions carefully if you’re tight on space.

    fitness news Multi-Adjustable Bench

    Pros

    • Elevated aesthetic
    • Extremely easy to adjust incline angles
    • Convenient to move and storage
    • Sturdy and stable for moderate lifts

    Cons

    • Not as much weight capacity as some options on this list

For those in search of a better looking bench fit for your living room or guest room, this new offering from Matrix is a great option. The build is commercial grade, and fit for most heavy lifts. This bench is part of a set the manufacturer offers that includes adjustable dumbbells and storage rack, for those who are seeking a sleek-looking package.

“I like how easy it is to move and store this bench for how stable and sturdy it is,” says Thorp. “Combined with the adjustable dumbbells, it brings everything that I need for a solid workout to my basement, with an aesthetic that elevates the room.”

As sturdy as the bench is, it lacks the weight capacity of the Prime or the Hammer Strength benches. Able to handle up to 650 pounds, it should withstand the majority of training scenarios, but if you’re a body builder looking to move some real weight, there are probably better places to look in this guide.

The versatility of this bench is another highlight, with five different angles of incline and the ability to reverse the backpad to better support individuals with different body types or other comfort demands. The wheels and handle make it easy to move, and storing against the wall for additional floorspace is simple.

fitness news Foldable Flat Weight Bench

    Pros

    • Sturdy weight capacity
    • Lightweight, easy to move around
    • Foldable design is great for tight spaces
    • Great for beginners

This flat bench from Flybird is a suitable option for beginners who are tight on space, offering good value just north of $100. While there are higher-quality flat benches available at a higher price point, the foldable legs make it a standout choice for storage when not in use. The pin and lock system for the folding legs is efficient, taking less than a minute to set up or break down.

The bench is also extremely lightweight, making it easy to move and store as needed. However, for those performing lifts with dumbbells over 50 lbs, a heavier option is preferable for more stability. Despite its lightness, we found it reliable for various exercises like light dumbbell presses, curls, and skullcrushers at home.

According to Samuel, this is a very solid entry level bench. “It’s more on the cushioned side and actually very comfortable,” he explains. “It’s obviously not going to do incline and is prone to sliding, so you definitely want a yoga mat under it.” It’s a budget-friendly option suitable for novice and intermediate lifters, as long as precautions are taken to stabilize the bench.

Fitness news Are Weight Benches Suitable for All Fitness Levels?

You don’t necessarily need a weight bench to get strong and build muscle, but having one gives you access to a host of exercises (regardless of fitness level), especially when it comes to upper-body training.

Most basic exercises that beginners should master, like dumbbell presses and single-arm dumbbell rows and hip thrusts, are much easier to execute with a bench (especially an adjustable one). Meanwhile, more advanced lifters can get incredible mileage out of a bench by unlocking more innovative moves like half-bench single-arm presses and single-arm rows.

    fitness news horizontal black line

Fitness news Flat vs. Adjustable Benches

Here’s a breakdown of the key differences:

    Design

A flat weight bench is designed with a fixed, flat surface, whereas an adjustable weight bench allows you to adjust the angle of the bench to different incline or, in some cases, decline angles.

“The adjustable benches that offer a decline setting are a terrific value for anyone who wants to get creative with their core exercises while training at home,” says Samuel.

    Exercise Variety

“Adjustable benches give you so many more options for your exercises,” explains David Otey, C.S.C.S and Men’s Health Advisory Board member. “Instead of just working at flat or upright, all of the angles in between can give you variety and diversity in your training options.” Those angels allow you to bias muscle groups in different, more selective ways. A flat weight bench limits you to exercises that can be performed on a flat surface.

    Convenience

Adjustable benches offer more convenience overall (especially well-built ones), offering access to more movements and angles. Adjustable benches also offer support for extra movements, such as overhead presses and lateral raises, which can allow for greater loading of those movements in the long term. But flat weight benches win for convenience in two areas. They’re generally lighter, so you can more easily move them around your gym, and they’re easier to stow when not in use, too.

    Maintenance

Because flat weight benches generally have fewer mechanisms and lack a hinge of any sort, they’ll be easier to maintain. Adjustable benches don’t require a ton of maintenance, but it’s worthwhile every so often to check on bolts and caps, and make sure your hinge mechanism is working smoothly.

    Price

Generally, an adjustable weight bench is more expensive than a flat weight bench due to its more complex design and features.

The Men’s Health New Gym Commandments

The Men’s Health New Gym Commandments

    Wellness advice

DECADES AGO, THE gym was reserved only for muscle-bound behemoths pumping iron—and their clanking plates and loud grunts and smells like you wouldn’t believe.

But these days, it’s all changed. From budget spots (think: Planet Fitness) to capital-F Fancy health clubs like Life Time and Equinox to classic musclehead spots like Gold’s, today’s gym scene offers something for everyone. To some, it’s a summer refuge from the heat, to others, it’s a Saturday afternoon date spot, and yeah, a few people still want to blow up their biceps and pecs and egos, too.

More than ever, the gym is now for everyone, whether you’re chasing muscle or sweat or 10,000 steps or just a little bit of social connection. And to rack up maximum gains we all need to know how to be comfortable in the gym—and how to make everyone else comfortable too.

That’s where Men’s Health’s New Gym Commandments come in. We’ve picked the brains of fitness’ finest experts (both men and women), and observed typical gym-goer behavior. The result is these 10 guidelines that will help you (and everyone around you) get the most out of every rep, round, set, and circuit—all without becoming the dreaded guy delivering the form-checks nobody wants.

Bookmark this page for the next time you find yourself guessing about what to wear to the gym. These rules will help you get fit while fitting in, anytime, anywhere.

    1. No Equipment Campouts!

SOME SPOTS LIKE squat racks, benches, and leg press machines become high-value real estate when the gym gets busy. Yet very often, you’ll see someone camping out on the squat rack for 10 to 20 minutes on end. (Even worse: They’ll be scrolling through three TikToks and two Instagrams before doing their next set.)

If you’re going to spend more than 10 minutes at any gym station, you’ll need to learn to share. That goes for dumbbells or machines too—especially if you’re doing a circuit. “If you plan to use a machine for a long time, be open to sharing it as a normal default,” says trainer Lee Boyce. “Allowing others to work in with you shows respect for your space.”

A bonus: sharing your machine will subtly auto-regulate your rest periods, letting you push harder and heavier when you do work.

    2. Leave The Equipment How You Found It

PUT YOUR WEIGHTS back where you found them. And always wipe. Everything. Down. If your back or your butt is going against a piece of equipment, once you’re done with your sets, you should towel it off (even if you haven’t left a sweat lagoon behind).

This isn’t just a common courtesy thing, either. “For members who are visually impaired, a cluttered gym floor makes it really difficult to navigate through the gym safely,” says Claudette Sariya, NASM. “The gym becomes a second home for a lot of people, so it’s important to treat it the way you’d want other people to treat things in your home.” AKA, not like your frat house.

    3. No Unsolicited Form Checks

LISTEN, FORM CHECK is our series, not yours. And despite what the dude with the Ph.D in bench pressing and the certification in squats at your gym says, it’s not his either. Truth is, nobody should be telling anyone how to do the perfect biceps curl no matter how many hours they’ve put in studying TikTok, because, as the real experts say, there’s no such thing as truly perfect form. The most experienced gym-goers know that injuries and goals often change how somebody approaches an exercise.

The most experienced gym-goers also know that they’ll get a better workout if they focus on their sets instead of everyone else’s. “The gym is already intimidating, especially for some women and beginners,” says trainer Nellie Barnett, CPT. “So don’t make it worse by being the know-it-all that no one asked.”

    4. Film Away—If You’re the Star

THE RIGHT VID just might help you master your deadlift form—or kickstart your fitfluencer career. But unless you paid the gym some Disney-level location fee, you have to share the space. So guest stars (read: other gym patrons) shouldn’t be in your HIIT short film unless they’ve agreed to it (or are getting royalties).

Keep the camera focused on you at all times. And sure, you can bring your tripod and your ring light and the entire production crew from Deadpool & Wolverine for your biceps blowout epic, too. Just observe the five-foot rule: keep everyone and everything on your team within five feet of your person at all times. “Find a corner or empty space to film,” says trainer Gerren Liles, NASM. “Most people won’t mind there being cameras, but it’s in your best interest.” Translation: Less photoshop work later.

    5. Phone Calls Are (Sometimes) OK

YES, IT’S COMPLETELY fine to check your email during a workout, or snap a selfie when the gym lighting is just right. But when your tax accountant calls to break down your expenses?

Sure, pick up the call, but consider it an 8-ounce jaw curl: You’re working out your vocals during a phone conversation, so vacate your weights and your bench so others can train larger muscles. Your one exception? Yes, you can call your bestie during a treadmill walk.

Know this, though: All those calls just may kill your gains. “Here’s a challenge,” says Boyce. “Log your workout progress the old college way: with a pen and notebook.”

    6. Workout First, Socialize Second

YES, FITNESS IS great with friends! But here’s the thing: Once a squad grows beyond a group of four, it’s basically a group fitness class. And that works in CrossFit, not your local big-box.

Have a bigger crew than that? Then split off into two groups in the gym, that way you’re not monopolizing the equipment. This isn’t just for courtesy, either; it’s for your own gains. A training partner who yaps too much between sets ensures you’re building jaw muscle instead of quads, lats, and abs.

    7. Absolutely. No. Creeping.

IT’S THE START of a really terrible Netflix romcom: you lock eyes with someone from across the free weights section. They beckon you over for a spot. You graze hands as you swap out plates—and suddenly you’re married and inviting the entire Gold’s Gym staff. Right?

Wrong. Because a workout isn’t a mating ritual. Sure, you just might meet somebody at the gym, but the workout comes first (see: Commandment No. 6). So wait til a rest period (Commandment No. 10; look how it all works together!), or post-workout protein shake time. “Us gym girls know we’re hot,” says MH associate editor Cori Ritchey, C.S.C.S. “But save it for when I’ve finished my workout.”

    8. Dress for Muscle Success

EVEN IF YOU’RE crushing a three-hour workout every day, the gym is not actually your house. It’s everyone else’s, so you’ll need to follow everyone else’s rules. In most gyms, that means rocking a shirt (even if you have Hemsworth-level abs). And you’ll need to wear shoes, too.

Really want to get your Magic Mike on midway through your chest workout? Trainer Jake Boly, C.S.C.S, says there’s a simple rule you can follow: Ask a gym employee first. “I love lifting barefoot at times and training shirtless,” Boly says. “But is that the culture of your gym?” If you’re scared to ask whether you can take your shirt off, that’s your first sign to keep your clothes on.

wellness advice a person lifting weights

    Mansi Vinay

    9. Pick Your Godzilla Spots

THE GYM CAN often seem like a zoo, with heavy weights dropping and plenty of grunting and panting. But watch closely, and there’s a method to the madness. When you’re not actually “working” during a workout, you don’t get to channel Godzilla.

So sure, exhale loudly during a tough set of bench presses or kettlebell swings or sprint. But once you put the weights down, quiet down—and learn to put the weights down quietly, too, says Boyce: “Believe it or not, there’s a correct way to dump weights at the end of a heavy set.”

Can’t do it? You’re likely lifting too heavy.

    10. Quiet During the Set!

WOULD YOU WANT somebody asking your surgeon for a scalpel midway through your heart surgery? No. And, truth be told, some gym lifts (think: heavy bench presses and snatches and those confounding Turkish getups) require surgeon-level focus, if only for a few seconds.

That’s why the golden rule of gym conversation is this: Don’t speak to anyone when they’re working. If somebody’s midway through a set or a circuit or a 5-mile run, can they really give you a spot, share their equipment, or catch you up on House of the Dragon then anyway? “Read social cues,” says trainer Andrew Coates. “If someone has headphones on or a cap down of their eyes, you’d better already have their phone number if your interruption is welcome.”

Once they’re done, give them three deep breaths. Then ask your question.

I Took the New Hummer EV for a Spin and It Was Better Than I Imagined

I Took the New Hummer EV for a Spin and It Was Better Than I Imagined

    Nutrition guides

IT’S AROUND 2 P.M. on a cool Saturday afternoon, and I’m midway through a workout in an empty parking lot in upstate New York. There’s not a single barbell or weight machine in sight. Yet somehow, despite not having my big training staples, I’m keeled over, hands on my knees, lungs on fire.

That’s because I just finished off my third set of seriously heavy work, dragging a GMC Hummer EV for about 30 seconds through a lot near the camping area in Hillside Park, up in Hastings-0n-the-Hudson. And I’ll be honest, I didn’t quite realize just how hard it would be (or how much it would rock my glutes and abs and lats and forearms) to haul an 8,500-pound behemoth of a vehicle in neutral with a pair of straps.

This wasn’t a normal workout, of course. Then again, when you’re away for the weekend and tight on time, it makes for a good workout. It was a good reminder that my workout can take many forms, and with a vehicle like the Hummer EV, it can happen anytime, anywhere.

That’s the true magic of the Hummer EV. GMC’s electric SUV isn’t just a terrific ride, but it’s a complete vehicle that lets you bring any part of your life anywhere – even into the middle of the woods. My weekend with GMC’s monster felt like three days with a Transformer stripped from a Michael Bay flick. Not only did the EV survive three full days with just one charge-up, but it let me haul enough gear for two full workouts, and still had so much room that I took my parents and little brother out for dinner. Translation: Plenty of fun and versatility.

    An Electrifying Experience

I’ve tested several electric cars before, but nothing could prep me for this Hummer. Its sheer size was eye-catching, and once I got inside, I felt incredibly at home. Few vehicles, even pickups, are as roomy as this Hummer, which comfortably seats five, with leg room to spare. An underrated bonus was the quality of the back seats, which were also heated: perfect for my 81-year-old father, who got in and out of the vehicle with surprising ease.

The trunk space, meanwhile, was practically livable. I’m never sure how much gear I can fit into an SUV comfortably, so I only brought a few dumbbells, a kettlebell and a TRX. But you can easily fit a Rogue bench, and some medballs in there, too, which would have made for a more versatile workout. The only reason I talked myself out of that: I didn’t want to turn loading the vehicle into more of a workout.

When I headed from my home in Westchester, New York, to a restaurant with my parents, the Hummer EV showed off its greatest feature: Uncommon acceleration. I’m a speed guy (the kind who thinks about Corvettes). And I simply wasn’t ready for the Hummer EV to jump like that when I first hit the gas, easily bursting to 60 mph. None of that speed feels lumbering, either; the Hummer still handles itself with agility, and has so many features (sorry, crab walk!) I didn’t dare to even try. This is an SUV nerd’s dream with enough driving fun for this speed nerd, too.

    Training With the Hummer EV

And . . . it satisfied the fitness nerd in me in next-level ways. A day later, when I reached Hillside Park, about 90 minutes from my house, I definitely wanted to rest. But the easiest way to get a workout done during a three-day weekend filled with travels and family is to bang that workout out first thing.

So, despite feeling fatigued, I swiftly unloaded my gear from the Hummer EV, and got to work. And it’s then that I wished I’d gone ahead and packed that Rogue bench. I didn’t have anywhere to set up for dumbbell rows or other exercises. Except I did have this beast of a Hummer – and it has a host of places for me to lean on when I’m rowing. She’s a sturdy badass, too, barely rocking no matter how explosive I got with my dumbbell rows. I banged out a few sets of rows, squats, push presses, and curls, and definitely worked up a solid sweat.

nutrition guides Image no longer available

But I needed a workout finisher, and that’s where the Hummer EV really delivered. I popped her into neutral, and attached my TRX hooks to the front. Then, I started pulling. And no, it wasn’t easy, but it was plenty satisfying to drag the Hummer along for 30-second intervals, on and off. (I polished things off with a quick cooldown hike around the park.)

The Hummer EV is the kind of vehicle that’s ready for anything. And it’s perfect for my lifestyle as both a huge fitness person who wants to work out and as a fitness trainer. One of the most underrated trends out there is the fitness truck, a trailer truck tricked out with dumbbells and barbells and battle ropes and other fitness gear, perfect for trainers aiming to work out clients on the road, or run group classes in parking lots. Often, these are trailer trucks.

The Hummer EV is a better experience for trainers like me, who work one-on-one with clients, offering a much smoother (and nerdier but intensely super-cool!) ride, while delivering that ability to let me challenge clients (and myself) with the Hummer drag finisher.

    Is This the Perfect Vehicle?

I’ve spent most of my life driving a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport (which I love and plan to keep until I die). It has 421,000 miles on it, though, so I’m aware that I may eventually need a new SUV in my life. But I’d never taken a trip in a vehicle that truly captivated me – until I met the Hummer EV.

GMC’s ride delivered everything I want in an SUV, serving my parents comfortably and delivering a terrific thumping bass when I listened to Linkin Park and Kendrick Lamar with the windows down. The Hummer also added so many little touches that I’m destined to miss a few in this story (the view through the clear-glass Infinity View roof, both in the day and at night, was serene and deserves mention).

Best of all perhaps: The GMC Hummer EV cured my range anxiety. I’ve shied away from creating a long-term relationship with an electric since taking one up north and returning home with just eight miles left on it. Despite taking the Hummer EV north and back twice, then driving it into Manhattan (and back) later, I ended my time with it with 70 miles left.

The only thing more fun than that drive: dragging the thing for a workout.
